Testing for Down Syndrome

Trisomy Testing

Expecting parents should undergo Trisomy screening tests, which usually combine blood tests and ultrasound results. If screening tests are positive or high-risk, further diagnostic tests will be necessary. After birth, a diagnosis of Trisomy 21 will be largely based on the presence of characteristic Down Syndrome features which include:

Flat face with an upward slant to the eyes
Short neck
Small hands or feet
Abnormally shaped ears
Protruding tongue
Poor muscle tone, loose ligaments, excessive flexibility
White Spots in the iris of the eye

For more information on Trisomy testing and treatment, visit the American Pregnancy Association.
