The National Family Caregivers Association and Homewatch CareGivers, a national provider and educator of in-home caregivers, Monday name Peterson the 2011 winner of their National Family Caregiver of the Year Award. It includes a $10,000 prize, eight hours of respite care and online training.
Peterson, 51, of Fort Collins, Colo., cares for husband Rob, 66, who has Huntington's disease, and son Will, 17, who is developmentally disabled.
She also is a project and case manager at the Larimer County Workforce Center. "It's important for employers to understand this isn't something you can walk away from or organize out of your life," she says.
