Bright Idea: Valentine’s Day

Five ways to show your aging loved one you care on Valentine's Day.
While Hallmark, FTD and Hershey’s undoubtedly reign on February 14th, the best Valentine comes from the heart. Why not celebrate the day of true romance and unconditional love by doing something unique for the senior citizens in your family and community? Here are a few quick tips to get you started:
Keep it simple. Grab a few paper scraps and a glue stick, and craft a good, old-fashioned valentine. This timeless, handmade tradition is the ultimate expression of Valentine’s Day spirit for everyone in the family.
Take a walk down memory lane. Create a photo album or scrapbook dedicated to family romance, including everything from weddings to holding hands at the park. If your parent is widowed, set aside some time to look through the album and reminisce together.
Host an intimate brunch. Invite elderly family members or neighbors who would otherwise be alone to brunch at your home. Cover the table with lace and serve heart-shaped pancakes. Ask each person to bring a special Valentine’s Day memory to share.
Make a music CD. Grab the family technical genius (AKAyour high school or college student) and ask them to help design a Valentine’s Day CD for grandparents. Focus on classic love songs that the older generation will recognize and enjoy, but don’t hesitate to throw in a few modern-day favorites, as well.
Give the gift of companionship. Whether you’ve been waiting for the right time or simply want to go the extra mile, hire a caregiver to assist your loved one with meal preparation and housework, play games and provide meaningful conversation, or even help send valentines to grandchildren. Our Quality of Life Care services are specifically focused on allowing your loved one to maintain their daily routines happily and healthfully.
