Holiday Helping Hands

Even joyful times can be busy. The holidays are a time of traditions, family celebrations, festive meals, and shared experiences, but it can also be a time of simply more to do.

This is an excellent time of year to consider professional companion care from an in-home care agency if there isn’t a family member available to take on more errands, chores and other responsibilities.

Here are some of the things an in-home caregiver can help with when the to do list becomes overwhelming:

  1. Yes, people still send cards! A caregiver can buy cards, address and mail cards—and don’t forget the stamps and a possible line at the post office.
  2. Wrap gifts, then help with getting them ready to mail and even get them mailed on time.
  3. Help select holiday clothing, make sure it has been dry cleaned (if needed) and still fits.
  4. Pick up relatives at the airport and bring them home to you or a loved one.
  5. True, some people may have switched over to digital cards and messages, but for those who are living with vision loss, just having someone there to read an email—and possibly reply on behalf of another—can be helpful.
  6. Coordinate schedules with normal routines and incoming guests.
  7. Pick up the groceries, or even put them away if delivered.
  8. Help with meal preparation.
  9. Give the gift of care by either making yourself more available or get a gift certificate for in-home care services. Even if they don’t use it during the holidays, they can look forward to this assistance when family has gone back to work or home elsewhere.
  10. Assistance with decorating the house. Holiday décor is typically stored in an attic, basement or garage and having someone else retrieve the boxes, unpack, and deck the halls can be a big help for those who are elderly or living with a chronic condition.

In general, remember to stay calm as people’s abilities and needs changes so routine tasks might take longer than they used to.
