Just selflessly giving of one’s self to care for another person is not necessarily sustainable or in the best interest of both parties. Professional caregivers should be trained in so that they possess the ideal skills for each client and family caregivers should also take care of themselves so they can continue to be available for their loved one.

You might notice it when you go out shopping for presents in December. The roads are icy and your mom or dad is behind the wheel. But instead of their usual confidence in the driver’s seat, they are timid. It makes you nervous. The roads aren’t that bad right now, but if they get worse and your parents can’t handle them – what happens? If you feel this way, it might be a good idea to talk to them about giving up the keys - temporarily – during the winter. The idea is to “suspend” their licenses while it’s icy out on the roads.
