Aunt’s Alzheimer’s Diagnosis Inspires Ohio Senior Care Franchisee

Franchisee Eric Malkin leveraged his background in finance to launch his homecare business.

Eric Malkin knows numbers. After all, he was a financial analyst for three companies in the Beachwood, Ohio region for many years. So when he came upon the Homewatch Caregivers franchise opportunity he knew the homecare business would make good financial sense.

He also recognized that the market is primed for growth, as US seniors 65 and older are expected to double in demographic size from 46 million in 2016 to over 98 million by 2060. Homewatch Caregivers provides personal and companion care and a whole range of services in the continuum of care. Given the anticipated market increase, it’s easy to see the growth potential for related homecare business services.

In addition to the numbers adding up, Malkin also had a personal connection to the business: his aunt had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and taking care of a loved one hit close to home. He decided to go all in and became a Homewatch Caregivers franchisee in 2006. Since then, Malkin’s business has been providing homecare services to Ohio’s Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties.

Malkin says that his background in business has played a huge role in how he runs his franchise location and the company culture he wants to nurture. He is also a Certified Senior Advisor, which indicates knowledge of working with seniors. Malkin’s wife, Rosey, is the Director of Nursing at the facilities and a managing director runs daily operations. The Homewatch Caregivers team, Malkin says, shares his values of honesty and integrity.

Homewatch Caregivers is deeply invested in the mental and emotional health of their clients in addition to keeping an eye on physical outcomes. Case in point: Malkin had a 97-year-old woman under his care and she had no family to care for her. She grew to enjoy working with Pat, her caregiver from Malkin’s office. Malkin says that while the client eventually passed away, she only did so after interacting with Pat one last time, an occasion that was soulful for all concerned.

It is relationships such as these, Malkin says, that he is proud of nurturing. He especially enjoys making decisions that will have a direct positive impact on families who struggle to care for loved ones. It is also why he appreciates being part of a thriving homecare business and belonging to a committed franchise such as Homewatch Caregivers.
