Albuquerque And Surrounding Areas

When I was in elementary school, I remember the day that my parents came to me and my siblings to tell us that our grandfather had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and that he and my grandmother would be moving in with us.  As children, we did not understand the disease, but my father, who was a doctor, and my mother, understood and wanted to provide the care for them, surrounded in dignity and respect.

During that time I was excited to have my grandparents at our house. I loved spending time with them.  In the beginning my grandfather didn’t act too differently other than forgetting things. As the years passed, life for him really took a turn and he needed a lot more care. It was hard, but we all learned how to be there for him, the way he needed us to be. Eventually, the disease took its toll; he developed diabetes and needed care 24 hours a day. My parents had to make the decision to move him to a nursing facility. I know it was hard on my parents to have to do this, but at the time it was the safest place for him to be and there were no options for home assistance, other than hiring a private nurse, which was very expensive.

In the past few years, my father passed away from complications with diabetes and my mother has had 2 hip surgeries that required long-term rehabilitation. My husband Rob, and I, chose to care for each of them in our own home as we weren’t familiar with any other options available.  As we both were employed full time, we found it difficult to adjust to the stress and the change in our life balance. From taking off of work to take mom to the doctor, to the coordination of care coming into our home from the skilled medical personnel, our hands were completely full, leaving  no time to tend to other things in our lives.

And that’s what brings us to today, to the grand opening of Homewatch CareGivers in Albuquerque. Rob  and I have a deep understanding of what it takes to care for a loved one, a family-centric value system of only entrusting certain people to the care our family, and a deep commitment to the dignity and respect of everyone, as did my mother and father.
