Parkinson's Disease & Dancing

Caregiving Services That Help You Move

What started as a local dance class in New York has become a worldwide program to help people with Parkinson’s disease get exercise. The Dance for PD® program is now available in over 100 communities and nine countries.

The impetus for the program was to get people living with Parkinson’s disease socially engaged, moving physically, and possibly alleviate symptoms of depression.

“The classes engage the participants’ minds and bodies, and create an enjoyable, social environment that emphasizes dancing rather than therapy,” states the Dance for PD® program website. “The Dance for PD® class is an aesthetic experience that uses the elements of narrative, imagery, live music and community to develop artistry and grace while addressing such PD-specific concerns as balance, flexibility, coordination, isolation, and depression.”

In these classes, professional dancers guide the participants, but there is room for improvisation.
Yoga dancing is another form of movement and exercise that the National Parkinson Foundation recommends. Let Your Yoga Dance® incorporates yoga, breathing, and dancing to help people with Parkinson’s disease socialize and move their bodies.

Find a class in your area or purchase a DVD from Dance for PD® and invite a friend over for some joyful movement.
