At Homewatch CareGivers in Idaho, we believe our team’s health is just as important as the care we provide to others. That’s why we’re highlighting the Great American Smokeout, an annual opportunity to take a powerful first step toward a smoke-free life.
What Is the Great American Smokeout?
Each year on the third Thursday in November, the American Cancer Society encourages people who use tobacco to quit for a day or to take a meaningful step toward quitting permanently.
This event isn’t just symbolic. It marks a “Day One”. A moment when thousands of people nationwide begin their quit journey, backed by resources, support, and a plan.
Why It Matters for Employee Wellness
Smoking remains one of the leading preventable causes of serious health problems. By quitting, even partially or temporarily, the health benefits begin to take effect quickly.
For our caregivers, home health staff, and administrative team, reducing or quitting tobacco use can:
- Improve cardiovascular and lung health.
- Lower cancer risk.
- Improve overall health and stamina on the job.
- Set a positive example for clients and peers.
Quitting Is Possible
Tobacco addiction is hard. According to the American Cancer Society, successful quitting often starts with a plan and support. Research shows that using counseling and FDA-approved medications (like nicotine replacement therapy) doubles or even triples the chances of quitting for good.
That’s why the Smokeout is about starting a journey with intention.
Your Path Forward
Here’s steps you can do this November and beyond:
- Declare Your “Day One.”
Use the Smokeout as a starting line. Even if you don’t quit entirely that day, you can commit to making a quit plan. - Build a Support System
- Try the Empowered to Quit program from the American Cancer Society. It’s a free, personalized email-based support program proven to increase quit success.
- Call the ACS 24/7 helpline for tailored help at 1-800-227-2345.
- Use counseling, coaching, or quit lines to stay motivated and make a realistic plan.
- Select Evidence-Based Tools
Consider combining behavioral support with FDA-approved medications to boost your chances. Ask your doctor or pharmacist what might be right for you. - Use Free Resources
The American Cancer Society offers downloadable tools for workplaces: flyers, quit cards, social graphics, and more. All ready to use and easy to share. - Celebrate Progress
Every smoke-free hour, every resisted craving, every check-in with your quit buddy is a win. Quitting is rarely a straight line; many people make several attempts before succeeding.
