what is home care

Most of our clients do not understand the difference between home care and home health care. While these services complement each other, they are not the same. One of the roles we take on at Homewatch CareGivers of Sarasota is making sure that our clients and their families are educated about the differences in these services.

For example, when a client leaves Sarasota Memorial Hospital, but still requires in-home physical therapy back in Longboat Key, we like our caregivers to be present during those sessions. It helps them understand the language that the physical therapist is using. Also, our caregivers can help remind our clients of the exercises they need to be performing; advising family members of progress; and being directly supportive to our clients.

Our caregivers can even offer useful information to the physical therapist. Physical therapists may only be in the home for an hour or two, which doesn't often give them the insight into our clients that our caregivers have. They understand the personality and the day-to-day needs of our clients, since they are with them for longer periods.

We understand that you may have questions about the types of services available to keep your family safe and healthy. First, let’s make some distinctions between home care and home healthcare.

Home Healthcare

After a doctor’s visit or stay in the hospital, skilled care in the home is arranged in order to get you or a loved one back on your feet. Home healthcare includes:

  • Skilled nursing
  • At-home physical therapy
  • Pain Management
  • Caring for wounds
  • Prescription management

Home Care

Home care is about sustaining and maintaining your loved one’s quality of life in their home by assisting with activities of daily living:

  • Help with personal grooming like bathing or getting dressed
  • Help with moving around and getting in and out of bed or the shower
  • Medication reminders
  • Help with errands and chores
  • Companionship and friendship so your loved one is not lonely
  • Help preparing meals
