This is a great time to focus on simple ways to help older adults stay safe, comfortable, and confident at home. From preventing falls to staying hydrated during hot days, daily habits can make a big difference in supporting health and independence all summer long.

National Safety Month is an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness about preventing injuries and creating safer environments in our homes and communities. For seniors and their family members, ensuring safety in the home is especially significant. Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury among seniors which can have a lasting impact on a senior’s health, independence, and quality of life. The good news is that there are numerous actions and services which can help with staying safe at home.

Simple measures such as removing clutter, securing loose rugs, improving lighting, and installing grab bars in bathrooms can reduce the risk of falls. Families should also ensure that frequently used items are easily accessible to avoid unnecessary reaching or climbing.

It is also important to be realistic about and recognize a decline in managing activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing and maintaining general hygiene, cleanliness of the home environment, proper meal preparation and eating, and correct medication management. Noticing weakness and unsteady ambulation is critical. Should any of these become problematic, it is a sign that support could be necessary. Some level of in-home care may be the right fit for your senior loved one.

Homewatch CareGivers provides compassionate care by certified home health aides, supervised by nurses and social workers/client service managers so seniors can live their best lives. We focus on the whole person; acknowledging that each of our clients is unique and so is the care we provide. With necessary assistance, we help older adults maintain their independence in the comfort of their own homes where they usually prefer to stay, and gives peace of mind to the family.

National Safety Month also encourages emergency preparedness. Seniors and their families should review emergency contact information, ensure medications are readily available, and have a plan in case of power outages, severe weather, or other unexpected situations.

The National Safety Council reminds us that creating a safer home does not always require major changes. Often the small adjustments and daily habits can make the greatest difference in the lives of older adults.
