Summer Safety Tips for Seniors and Family Caregivers

Senior husband and wife outside in the sun

Summer is a beautiful time of year - longer days, fresh air, and more time outdoors. But as a family caregiver, you probably already know that warmer weather brings some extra challenges when caring for a senior loved one.

Whether it’s managing heat exposure, adjusting daily routines, or simply making sure your loved one is comfortable, summer safety requires a little extra attention. The good news? A few simple adjustments can go a long way.

Here are some of the most important things we keep in mind this time of year, and that we encourage families to consider as well:

1. Hydration Comes First

Dehydration can sneak up quickly, especially for older adults who may not feel thirsty. Keep water easily accessible throughout the day, and offer sips often, especially if you’re spending time outside or in warmer areas of the home. Hydrating foods like watermelon and cucumbers can also help!

2. Dress for the Weather

Lightweight, breathable fabrics and a wide-brimmed hat can help keep your loved one cool during outdoor time. And don’t forget sunglasses to protect sensitive eyes from bright sun!

3. Time Outside Wisely

The hottest hours of the day, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., are best spent indoors. If you’re planning a walk, a picnic, or some time in the garden, aim for the early morning or late afternoon.

4. Keep the Home Comfortable

Make sure fans or air conditioning are working properly and that your loved one has access to cool spaces. If your home doesn’t have central AC, consider visiting a local community center, library, or indoor mall during peak heat hours.

5. Watch Medications

Some medications can affect how the body responds to heat or sun exposure. While we don’t give medical advice, we always encourage family caregivers to ask their loved one’s doctor or pharmacist if any summer precautions are needed based on their prescriptions.
