Woodbridge Veterans: We Honor Your Service with In-Home Care

At Homewatch CareGivers of Woodbridge, we understand the immense sacrifice veterans and their families have made for our country. Many veterans require assistance with daily activities after serving their nation. Here, we explore the various VA in-home care benefits available to veterans, surviving spouses, and current spouses to help them live life to the fullest in the comfort of their own homes.

Understanding VA In-Home Care Benefits

VA benefits support NJ

VA in-home care programs offer financial assistance to eligible veterans and their families to cover the cost of non-medical services that support daily living. These programs are categorized by eligibility requirements and the type of care provided.

For Veterans:

  • Aid and Attendance (A&A): This needs-based pension program provides financial assistance to veterans who require assistance with daily living activities (ADLs) like bathing, dressing, and eating.
    • Eligibility: Veterans must have served at least 90 days during wartime or 270 days during peacetime, with a discharge character of "other than dishonorable." They also need to meet specific financial needs and medical requirements for needing daily assistance.
  • Housebound Allowance: This program offers additional financial aid to veterans who are confined to their homes and require assistance with ADLs.
    • Eligibility: Similar to A&A, veterans must meet service requirements, have a "housebound" status verified by a doctor, and need daily assistance.

For Veterans' Spouses:

  • Aid and Attendance with a Dependent: This benefit extends A&A eligibility to spouses who provide primary care for a veteran receiving A&A benefits. The spouse can receive a stipend in addition to the veteran's benefit.
    • Eligibility: The veteran spouse must be married to the veteran for at least one year (or have a child together) and provide the majority of the veteran's care needs. The veteran must also meet A&A eligibility criteria.

For Surviving Spouses:

  • Dependency and Indemnity (DIC) Pension: This program provides financial support to surviving spouses of veterans who died in service or from service-connected disabilities.
    • Eligibility: Surviving spouses must have been married to the veteran for a specific length of time (depending on circumstances) and meet income requirements. The veteran's death must be service-connected.
  • Aid and Attendance for Surviving Spouses: Surviving spouses of veterans who meet the same eligibility criteria for A&A as veterans themselves can qualify for this benefit.
    • Eligibility: Similar to the A&A program for veterans, surviving spouses must need daily assistance with ADLs and meet income requirements.

Additional Considerations:

  • Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care: This program provides in-home care services such as bathing, dressing, medication reminders, and meal preparation. However, it is not a separate benefit program and can be used in conjunction with A&A or Housebound Allowance.
  • Veteran-Directed Care (VDC): This program allows veterans to manage their own care and hire caregivers directly. However, VDC is not currently available in all areas and may have specific eligibility requirements.
  • Each program has specific eligibility requirements and application processes. We recommend contacting the VA for detailed information and assistance.
  • Combining benefits: In some cases, veterans may be eligible for both A&A and Housebound Allowance. Additionally, surviving spouses may qualify for both DIC Pension and A&A for surviving spouses.
