The Caregiver Way

Our caregivers are so important to us and to our clients at Homewatch CareGivers serving Columbia, Maryland. It all starts with our hiring process: when someone fills out an application we take steps to verify that this is someone we can trust with our clients who need senior care or other types of in home care. During an interview, we look for good communication skills, kindness and compassion. If you are looking for a flexible schedule, good benefits, and want to make a difference in your community, consider joining our team. We love our staff and have an open door policy so everyone feels welcome.

Steps to Becoming a Caregiver

In order to do the personal work of caregiving, you must be in good health and have a clean record. In order to ensure this is a good job for you and a good fit for our clients, we require the following:

  • Pass a full background check (including state and federal FBI criminal investigation data)
  • Proof of passing a TB/PPD exam
  • Provide fingerprints
  • Agree to random drug testing and have clean results every time
  • Provide clean driving records
  • Provide references so we can verify experience and character from previous supervisors

Safety & Learning Matters

During our orientation for newly hired caregivers we look for the following:

  • Good communication and listening skills (speak clearly and take direction well)
  • Punctuality
  • Appropriate attire

Although we hire many seasoned professional caregivers, we want everyone on our staff to be open to learning new skills and our best practices. Our Homewatch CareGivers University is open to caregivers and clients alike to learn about specific diseases and treatments related to the care of an individual. Requirements for our caregivers include annual exam of state mandated courses including HIPAA, Blood Borne Pathogens, Infection Control and Abuse and Neglect training.

Our nurses are always there for our staff and will show the caregiver how to properly execute care techniques while also giving them the chance to ask any questions or review any skills.
