Meet Brenda Avadian, MA

Brenda Avadian, MA is an experienced family caregiver, author, former college professor, and award-winning speaker. Her caregiving journey began three years after her mother passed away and her father was in the early stages of dementia.

Ms. Avadian has written nine books, including two volumes of “Finding the Joy in Alzheimer’s” and “STUFFology 101: Get Your Mind Out of the Clutter.” She is also the founder of the website, The Caregiver’s Voice, which is designed to help caregivers who assist loved ones living with dementia.

“We’re fortunate today in that caregivers have many resources along the continuum of care to give us respite so that we may recharge in order to function once more,” she says.

Ms. Avadian is an advocate of finding the humor and joy in caregiving. “My perspective is fairly simple in this regard: We have a choice,” she says matter-of-factly. “We can choose to be miserable as we spiral into depression, or we can be grateful for the abilities that remain and feel uplifted. It’s our choice, each day.”

She writes regularly for U.S. News & World Report about caregiving and for other publications.
